There is this Movie I've Just seen...
If you are a fan of implausible, bordering on preposterous spy thrillers, you might like this film.
Salt borrows heavily from Bond flicks, Bourne flicks, Alias TV show and a movie called 'No Way Out' that featured a sleeper agent. Those movies had some basis for their reality, but this has none. The movie tries hard to be Bond or Bourne, but the gaping plot holes and utterly ridiculous story line kills it. It offers nothing more than some rather boring chases, and bad dialogue. Not even Liev Schrieber is any good in this one, and Jolie plays her usual pouty, devoid-of-emotion superspy that can leap tall buildings in a single bound. In fact, the number of seconds the camera focuses on her stare is uncomfortable. You know the rest: save the world from destruction. No attempt is made to explain motivations of any of the good guys or bad guys except vague world domination scenarios. Salt's own motivation is a blank, it's like they wrote this script as they filmed it, and said 'okay, now we need a twist, we're 27 minutes into the film!' Near the last half hour, it really departs from reality, and I just wanted it to be over. In short a really bad film, slickly produced, marketed and packaged. Skip it and save your money for a real thriller. It's remarkable how many BAD films Jolie has done, but she still has a career. She really adds nothing to this one except the lips and the stare.

Jolie likes charity. Maybe she signs on with bad production teams hoping to help their little movies get big.
 I just watched I Hate Valentine's Day with Nia Vardalos. I really liked it. It's a comedy like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and My Life in Ruins (only without any Greek reference at all). She plays a florist who doesn't believe in relationships and only goes on 5 dates with each guy. Then "the romance is gone" and she ends it before he can dump her. She starts dating the handsome business owner next door and drama ensues when he counts five dates and she only counts four. I really enjoyed this film. It explains how the main characters got in their current situation without being a deep thinker. She has to evaluate her philosophy and deal with emotions from her parents' divorce. It's a fun chick flick that isn't too silly.

Hmm - ok, I'll admit it. I saw Toy Story last weekend and it was terrific. So embarrassing for a grown-up - well, putative grown-up - to admit, but I cried. Those Pixar folks are not only terrific at the whole animation thing, they can WRITE! That's what's missing from most movies these days. The script - as you saw, Hugh - tends to be the last thing on the movie-makers' minds, hence the plethora of really lousy movies.

Sorry. I meant to say Toy Story 3 had one of the best uses of a deus ex machina I've seen in a film. You'll see what I mean if you go and see it.
