It's been years since I've done midnight showings of anything, but HP and twilight lend themselves to this kind of activity. Anyone been lately? What was the mood like?

I went to a midnight showing of one of the earlier HP films, and I suppose it was a bit more festive than a normal trip to the theater, but that's not saying much these days... waiting in line for new HP books was a lot more fun as not only did a few people dress up/cosplay but most people in line were knowledgeable fans eager to speculate about soon-to-be-revealed plot twists. (I spent some time in my last line talking with three Hermione Grangers.) Now if something were to develop a Rocky Horror-style set of audience responses, the addition of audience reacting to the film and each other would probably make a movie more of an event... though from what I've seen of Twilight fans, some of 'em would have to cross-dress to complete a set of cosplayers, and that werewolf guy would pose particular difficulties ;) unlike in HPverse where almost everyone wears robes that can hide a range of body types - I've seen convincing pics of at least one woman dressed as Professor Snape (no, it wasn't me. I've been tempted, but I'm too short for starters.)

Midnight shows are popular in my area, which has a surplus of movies screens. (There are more than 625 screens around the San Francisco Bay Area, and over 250 within ten miles of my house)
The twilighters have the midnight showings now, but there are at least two retroplexes planning HP marathons prior to the release of 7.1 I guess they'll show them over a series of weeks rather than all at once, but that sort of thing has huge draw.
We've had tailgating parties while waiting in line before, but with so many screens now, the lines are generally shorter.
Nevertheless, I expect that as with the final book release, the final film release will bring out everyone for the last hurrah. This is a front-loaded movie series. It would be fun to see this at a midnight showing, just to see if the local cinemas make a big deal out of it. Some of them, despite their corporate nature, have dressed things up a bit on some of the latest blockbusters.

Alas, we don't do midnight showings here in Scotland either, more's the pity. And yes, unless you are a slim teenager you don't stand much of a chance as a Twi-fan. So hurray for JK, who has given us older admirable women!
