Um, so what's with Dumbledore's fingernails?

Watch as he traces the slashes in the Fat Lady's portrait.

I´m sorry I dont know what you mean. I noticed they were really ugly, but besides that  Have I missed someting or do you think there is any significance in that?

Yep. Really long and really ugly. What's with that?

Significance? That's the thing -- I don't know. Is it just supposed to be another Dumbledore oddity, like the beard ring, or does it mean something?

Oooh ooh ooh I got it!

It's a parallel to Frodo!

So that means that--

Dumbledore's long nails? Who's paying attention to his long nails? i dunno... I was kinda bored in that part... I didn't really pay much attention. I don't like how they made Dumbledore in the movies. It's probably just me though.

Actually, I'm glad to discover I'm not the only one who noticed! I was - er - I guess 'grossed out' would cover it. Honestly! Why depict Dumbledore as a man who can't be bothered to clean his fingernails?! He has always struck me as a very precise, careful character. It was out of character. A jarring note in the movie, I thought.

Hmm... I think I kind of liked the fact that his nails were a bit grubby. I imagine that Dumbledore wouldn't be too botherered about having perfect looking nails - that he'd have other more important things on his mind. It seemed like quite a nice touch to me.

In rereading OotP, I was struck again by how carefully JKR portrays Dumbledore as the soul of politeness -- answering Fudge courteously, conjuring up a comfy chair for Mrs. Figg....

The lack of attention to his fingernails seems highly contradictory -- it makes him seem unsocialized.

Maybe he was just disturbed during his toilette :D

I have no idea why they did it like that, it looked odd, but it didint really disturb me :)

Ah, but that's just politeness towards other people, isn't it? Just good manners? Whereas I imagine that his fingernails are really just his own concern.

*Rapunzel can't really believe that she's giving serious consideration to Dumbledore's fingernails* :D

His own concern? Not when they're that big and dirty. :D

Do you think Cuaron or Kloves was trying to hint that Dumbledore has claws?

We´ll see :D

But maybe he was just doing some garden work (unpractical with such long nails) and couldn clean them in time ;))

I just saw PoA again this afternoon, and I also noticed the claw-like, very dirty fingernails on Dumbledore - and it bothered me, too. They were too close for comfort to Lupin's claws as he was transforming, and also a bit reminiscent of Pettigrew's disgusting fingernails.

I thought it was totally out of character - notice that he has the little beard-tie thingies, which would seem to indicate that he might even be a bit vain about his appearance.

*shudders to think of what the director might be trying to imply*

That Dumbledore is an animagus and turns into either a lion or a dragon. That's my guess.

:D That would be great... I'd love to see Dumbledore turn into a lion! Goodness that would ruin the books!
