Hmm.. first of all, it doesn't really look like Remus' hair in the pictures we've seen so far.

Second, look at the face. It actually looks more like Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy). Crazy haircut...

From 2 different girls who saw the unfinished preview:

Veritaserum.com:
What do you think of David Thewlis's performance?
Emily:
FABULOUS! He was great! And Lupin is my absolute favorite character. I think he’s better than anyone else in the movie. Sirius, too, but he was slightly more insane than I thought in the books.

Veritaserum.com:
What do you think of David Thewlis's performance?
Pat:
He was good, but he’s got this ugly mustache.

So, he's a good actor but looks hideous.

yeah, ive heard he's a good actor, but he's nothing at all like most of us imagined him to look like (and if you look on the back of OOTP you see a piccie of him with Tonks & Mad eye) So He's also too young to play him. which sucks! :(

Has anyone else noticed that, not only has he got a moustache (as if that wasnt bad enough), but that its also a really weird looking moustache? Sort of thin, and curvy, and just ... weird.

Anyway, I don't reckon the real Lupin (because that's quite clearly some imposter) would ever have a moustache. Because wouldn't it just be a bit too high maintenence? I mean, I just don't reckon he'd have time to do all that intricate careful shaving.

*grumble grumble*

Hey guys, haven't been here in a while (seriously, probably coming up on a year...OUCH!) but i'm back now!! (run away run away!)

anyways, about Thewis as Lupin:
i agree, he's not really how I imagined Lupin, but then again, Alan Rickman isn't how I imagined Snape (and i would have much preferred it if Tim Roth had taken the roll as well) but he turned out ok. So Thewis isn't exactly drop-dead gorgous, he's a kickass actor though and i think we all should give him a chance!! I was VERY excited when i found out he was going to be Lupin. The casting directors have yet to screw us over and put the perfectly wrong person in a perfectly right part, i say we trust them on this one!
I think he'll do a great job!

As for Oldman as Black: scarily similar to how i imagined him, and i didn't even put two and two together until i saw the pic of him as Black and thought "That's Sirius!"

Can't wait!!

SiriuslyInLove
03-29-2004, 04:36 PM

You all know me pretty well, so you have to belive me, Thewlis will be excellent as Lupin. I'm really going out on a thin limb here, but it's true! Please try to give him a chance! I know the moustache is alittle overwhelming, but should you really judge a book by its cover?

Me too! (except i'm more an elrond than aragorn sort of girl)

I guess that's why the moustasche is so annoying, I wanted to be able to swoon for Lupin in the movie, and now I don't think I can. There's just something about moustaches that's a bit ... creepy.

Anyway, I don't doubt that Thewlis will do a good job with the character, I dont really question the casting. I just question whoever decided that he should have that thing on his face.

Anyhow, on the plus side I was quite impressed with how he sounded in the new trailer.

Ah, maybe I can learn to love him. :D

And I DON"T like it!

lithorose
04-09-2004, 03:12 AM
Let's hope this is one of those rare instances where someone only looks bad in stills?

Don't care for the mustache, but I'm pretty much withholding all judgements until I see the movie. I will only add that a lot of the characters are different than I imagined. But that's to be expected; I'm even rather glad of it. One of the things about LOTR is that so many characters cast in the films looked so much like what I imagined that I can no longer imagine them as anyone else when I read the books.:(

Xyla
04-09-2004, 06:01 AM
What are those strange scratch/scars on his face?

lithorose
04-09-2004, 06:18 AM
I hadn't noticed those. Looks like they have gone with the werewolf scratching himself theory (which I'm not fond of). My Lupin has no scars.:p

Also, wouldn't frequent scratches appearing, oh say, every month (on the button) be a good tipoff that someone was a werewolf? And then, wouldn't it be that much easier for the students to figure out his secret?

Persephine

Hmmm, you know, I don't think that picture looks quite so bad... maybe it's because he's smiling...

Maybe he's growing on me! Or maybe my expectations have just gone down a bit. ;)

I hadn't noticed those scars either. I don't think new scratches would appear every month though, because he's got that potion now that means he keeps his mind when he transforms. I reckon they're probably really old, permanent scars.

They do sort of make me feel sorry for him though. Hmmm. Whilst I don't think I actually like movie Lupin yet, I don't think I dislike him quite as much as I did ...

There is still hope!

Fleurdelacour
04-09-2004, 12:07 PM
He just looks like that typical english/geography/maths/history teacher you get. Dreadfully drab, monotonously mournful, and unbearably uninspiring. The sort of teacher that stands infront of the blackboard with a piece of crumbling chalk, mumbling about algebra, moaning about "new methods" grumbling about the Gestapo and smelling like cigars, whiskey and coffee.

He'll have worn the same greyish brown tweed suit for the last twenty years, and his moustash regains new levels of tweekiness every week. He'll have socks that are now a grimy shade of grey, grey through the lack of a wife to sort out the whites from the darks in the washing machine. He'll own plain dark brown loafers, which are slightly scuffed from kids trying to kick him. His shirt will have the same dull, grey appearance, and his tie a delightful stripy brown and grey, or on Mondays he'll be exciting and wear a brown and mustard tie for the start of the week ahead.

His hair will either be greying, grey or dusty brown, whatever the colour it will either be annoyingly flyaway, balding or greasy. And the only hair found on his face is the dreadful moustache he preens like the privet hedging in his front garden.

I hate it.

That's NOT our Remus.

Athelas
04-09-2004, 03:34 PM
Thank you, Fleur, that's EXACTLY what he looks like! I will keep trying to remember all the fears I had about LOTR that ultimately were proved wrong, but right now,

ChianaWeasley
04-10-2004, 03:28 PM
I agree with Rapunzel, I like the picture. The moustache is a bit odd, but that is because we all have our own mental image of Remus Lupin in our heads. I myself pictured someone far older, with small rimmed glasses, and a sweater vest of checkers under a shabby cloak. But, I do like the way they choosen to portray Thewlis's character.

::fends off trouting::

Besides, i like the idea of the scars, except that might give the plot away too easily. But really, in away women feel scars are mysterious and sexy.

I guess we'll see how it all goes

Chiana is ever the more optimistic :p

Athelas
04-10-2004, 07:19 PM
Chiana, your optimism makes me smile! I always feel better after reading your posts.

I have a feeling this pic may be from the latter part of the movie and they are relatively new scrapes, but we'll see!

Fleurdelacour

Chiana, you're really scarily optimistic. I just hope you're right and I'm wrong :)

Rapunzel
04-11-2004, 07:30 PM
Maybe they're trying to teach us all a 'you can't judge a book by it's cover' type of lesson - 'you can't judge a man by his moustache'. Or his tweed. Or his shirt. Etc Etc.

I think I can see a hint of Lupin's kindness in that last picture. And I agree, Chiana, those scars are kind of sexy, in a mysterious sort of way.

Have you seen the int'l trailer? I just saw it through a link on the-leaky-cauldron.org and I have FINALLY seen a shot of Lupin I like! I'm sorry I don't know how to take a pic of it to post here, but they have a quick shot of Lupin on the train with perhaps his coat covering the lower part of his face (including the hideous mustache <shudder>), and he looks mysterious and sexy!

On the other hand, the part where he is opening the chest to let the boggart out for Harry to practice on has him looking quite the weenie:p
