View Full Version : Clues that aren't

I'm rereading Prisoner of Azkaban at the moment and I noticed this set-up:

From PoA, Chapter Seven
"I wonder why Professor Lupin's frightened of crystal balls?" said Lavender thoughtfully.
From PoA, Chapter Eleven
Professor Trelawney says about Lupin: "He positively fled when I offered to crystal gaze for him."

If we hadn't found out that Lupin was a werewolf, we'd still be debating and offering theories about why Lupin was frightened of crystal balls! :p

I always hear people say that JKR doesn't put things in her books without reason. Things have a way of having greater meaning later and we recognize clues in hindsight. And I agree that if she mentions something, it is likely to be important.

But I'm wondering if she's leaving any other red herrings lying about (ones we know of or ones we don't). For that matter, what exactly are the clues she's giving us? (Whether they're misleading or not.)

This may have been mentioned around somewhere. I thought of how in the GoF, on the camp grounds at the Quidditch championship game, Harry notices that the inside of the Weasly's tent looks just like ...er, the home of the elderly woman who lives near Harry and keeps him sometimes... can't remember the name. Well, of course she turns out to be a squib. So maybe that was supposed to be a clue.
I don't have a copy of the book so I can't flip through it and look for clues. I do bet there's tons of stuff you could find.

P.S. I've listened to the books a lot more than I've read them, so I don't know the right spelling for most stuff, and I think I forget names and things more easily. Bear with me. :)

Funnily enough Kristin, but I had a dream the other night that Remus had Seer blood and had a prophecy as a teen that all his friends would die somehow...

Remember in PS, Hagrid borrowed "Young Sirius Black's" motorbike, so she definatly put these things in for a reason...

In a live webcast she gave she hinted that Harry might die in the series

Heres a big clue, all the talk about sirius's family, maybe Bella knows where the house is and might lead Voldie to it, maybe as a hideout for him.

Harry won't die... If he dies, then Voldie takes over Britian, then the world.

But, this "power" that seems to be in that room in the DoE, might kill Harry after he kills Voldie...

All the way through HP5 we were getting massive red herrings. Given that we all picked up the book to read, knowing that someone important was going to die, we were looking for it from the first word. We got the boggart, and Mrs Weasley's dreams; we got the snake attack on Mr Weasley; we had Hagrid's unexplained absence - those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head (and I'm busy re-reading the books from the first one, so haven't yet re-read HP5). I bet JKR has tremendous fun laying out all the false clues for us to pounce upon.

Not quite a red herring in the sense of those other bits, but funny after all the flap over whether Ron might get killed off in Book 5. :)

I don't really think that's a danger. Dumbledore's the Secret Keeper, remember? So even if someone knows where to find it, they won't be able to unless Dumbledore has personally told them. At least that's the way I see it. :)

(edit)  Welcome, Torisen!!!

I would love to see the look on the Malfoy's faces when they are told Sirius black is dead and Narcissa can inherit the Black family house only to find that it doesn't seem to exist anymore...

would V work out pretty quick that it was under a *thingy magig charm*?

I reckon the worst red herring was the first we ever had about Snape in book one

I'd say the worst one for me was Mr Weasley (or McGonagall) in OotP. I really thought he (she) was going to die. :( *sniff*

I think that JKR really needs to pick her names more carefully. *indignant sniff* Mark Evans, come on, JK, you should know that we're hypersensitive to any mention of names that have been mentioned before. We've learned enough from Arabella Figg, Dung Fletcher, Sirius Black, Theodore Nott...

Here are a couple of names that I think won't be important:
1. Baruffio. He was the wizard who said 's' instead of 'f' (mentioned by Flitwick in Book 1) and Ron and Harry tried to buy Baruffio's Brain Elixir (or something) to help them with their studying.
2. Sturgis Podmore/Sir Properly Decapitated Podmore. You know, I'm so pathetic, I can't remember Sir Properly Decapitated's real name. :o

We only have two books left, I don't think that she can manage to fit in all of our theories.
