View Full Version : The Dog Days of Summer

Well I don't know about you, but it's starting to really feel like summer here. Being really hot is the first sign, of course.

So while I sit in the shade, avoiding the outdoors and painful sunlight, I figured a new topic about summer might liven things up a bit, as well as give me a reason to check the boards more.

So talk about your summer woes, plans, or just gripes. Let it all out.

And fancy the timing of this new thread! I took my last final today!

Right here it feels more like January than May (which is usually starting to feel slightly warm by now).

My summer won't really start until the 20th June because that's when I finish my last GCSE and I will be finally free from school forever! :D I'm just hoping the good old British weather won't fail us too much - I'd quite like to take advantage of my 2 and a half months of freedom.

Fleurdelacour

lol Remus. It's still raining! Rain and Wind in MAY! Hate it!

I'm looking forward to a summer of reading and beaches! :D I'm looking forward to the 21st June, however not looking forward to the 21st August (GCSE results... Mmmmm a day for black dresses methinks!)

I'm going to Jersey this year, one of the Channel Islands, its really French, but its British ;) And it has GREAT beaches! Where OotP and RotK will be with me all through that week... *sigh*

Yes I love summer, and it's going to be my longest summer since I was four years old! Summer term starts on the 13th June when my last exams are.

Wow! :D

Anything that doesn't have to do with school I 'm all for it!
Plus the pools open! and the sun oh the sun.And its the slurpy season oh the slurpy season. But I have to admit by Augest 20 I get kinda sick of the summer and I want something to do. But this year I am going to an art school, so maybe school won't be that bad.

Summer is a miricle in Oregon Because it rains half the YEAR!!. I hate it when it rains it makes everything so gloomy and cold. All I have to say is that THE RAIN DRIVES ME INSANE!

Luthien mumbles evil rain...........

Summer schmummer! We already had summer: it's autumn going on winter here, so there! :)

But I do tend to prefer winter to summer.. I don't always cope well with heat. Disgraceful, what with being an Aussie eh? ;)

Terrible Xaz! Next you'll be telling us you've never seen a kangaroo. ;) When I was younger that whole winter-in-July/August thing really messed with my head. :p
I'm useless with the heat, I stop eating and I can't sleep properly; I get a kind of reverse SAD. Good job I live in Britain. :p I like Autumn and Spring- not too hot, not too cold.

Remus- love your avatar.

Fleur- Jersey's great. I think the zoo was probably my favourite thing there, but it's amazing how much there is to do in such a small place. :)

Summer is for cools. Especially since we live on the coast. I don't think I would like summer so much if I didn't have the option to go lounge bout at the beach whenever I wanted to.

lol Remus, it's not that bad. It's sunny now anyway. Still pretty chilly though. Not sunbathing weather yet...

20th of may, bring it on! It's true, my summer will begin then, lots of lazy days reading HP in the sun with no exams. heaven.

I'm a bit of an all rounder though. I like all seasons, mostly cos oyu get a chance to dig out clothes you haven't wornfor months :)

Well...its still going on summer here ::Chian grumbles at the lucky Aussie::

Summer are killer around here, especially the past two. And 100 degrre weather and ^ is not fun during band camp. I can tell you that much.

I like heat better then the cold though:p

Shame on you Chiana and Seriphus for forgetting about my mail-delivering kangaroo! ;) And, well remembered Colli! :)

Oh, there's no need to complain about it not being summer here, Chiana... unless you're planning to switch hemispheres every six months there's not a lot you can do about it! ;) Just comfort yourself with the fact that when you're enjoying a cool, snowy winter I'm sweltering away getting bitten by mosquitos. :p :)

Summer is ok I guess...the best part is that there's no school and lots of reading time. However the worst part is band camp...without a doubt the worst part of the entire year. Ninety to one hundred degree weather, no shade, no breeze, few water breaks, killer bugs, asthma attacks.... I love playing and everything, and marching isn't always terrible, but really I'm beginning to think that it's not worth it anymore. :( One of the reasons I'm trying out for drum major...
I am looking forward to working all summer though, crazy as it sounds- I really need the money and I find bussing tables to be fun though disgusting.
Oh, another bad thing... one of my best friends spends the summer with her mom in Texas, and this year there's a chance that she may not come back. :(

As far as the season thing goes, my favorite is fall. I'd much rather be cold than hot though. If you're cold you can always turn up the heat or put on more clothes, but when you're hot, you can only take so much off...:o ;) :D

Colli
05-26-2003, 01:41 PM
Yeah... I have v. bad memories of band camp and heat. People passing out from the heat every time you turn around... ack.

But I still love the hot sun, the stickiness from sweating for x hours straight.... the tan which disappears for the rest of the year!

I'm so glad I'm going to college in Florida. :) Fall and winter can kiss my butt.

Fortunately it doesn't get too hot here in the summer, but still hotter than I like. Mostly I prefer it rainy, summer or winter. It just doesn't rain much in the summer.

Xaz, how is winter in Australia? Does it ever snow? Or is it still fairly warm?

Ayup! My thoughts exactly! Well said! :)

Winter in Australia depends on where you are, lithorose. :) Where I am, Melbourne, it never snows. The only places it really snows is in the mountains, if you want to call them that... they're not very high. :)
The temperature where I am is around abouts 13-18 degrees Celsius at this time of year, which the temperature converter tells me is roughly 55-65 Fahrenheit. So, I guess it doesn't get too cold. When are you Americans gonna get a real measure of temperature, anyways? Fahrenheit! Sheesh! ;)

05-27-2003, 03:24 AM
We like our quirky measurement systems, TYVM! :trout: It's usually between 40-50 here in the winter, and 80-100 in the summer (on the coast where I used to live it rarely even hit 80). Don't know the conversions, but 32 is freezing pt. of water and 100+ is when people start passing out. At least we don't have humidity. How do you people in the Midwest handle it?

Colli
05-27-2003, 03:59 PM
:) It's not that bad. At least it's usually really dry in the winter. My brother lives in Florida, and he says the occasional days when it's chilly (ie 40-50 degrees) feel SOOO much colder because it's still humid. Eek.

I just can't handle winter in the teens of degrees. *shudder*

Fleurdelacour
05-27-2003, 04:11 PM
When it comes to farhenheight, all I know, is 32 degrees is freezing, I base everything on that ;)

Well, according to Sian Lloyd (our weather lady) it's going to be 25 degrees celsius on Thursday which makes a wonderful change!! :D

I only saw my first proper snow in January and made my first snowman*cough*hobbit*cough* I want it back!

Fleurdelacour
05-27-2003, 04:52 PM
Well if you dont know what to do with it, then send it over to London! I mean, you see scenes in Briget Jones and Notting Hill, and it always snows... But that really never happens... Wish it did... With Colin Firth would sweep me off my feet... :swoon:

05-27-2003, 05:01 PM
Yeah, and over here they always show a white Christmas. Never happens. It snows about once every two years here, and never in December. Stupid people!:p

Last summer I was at Minneapolis airport for a bit, and it was probably about 75, but the humidity was so bad that between the plane and the airport I could feel the water soaking through my jeans. It was awful!

I actually hope it's raining or something for the next couple of weeks - but only when I have exams. On my days off I wouldn't mind a bit of sun. I just hate having to do ridiculously long exams in the stuffy hall or gym knowing people are out enjoying themselves.

Oh well, only 3 more weeks until freedom... :D

I always look forward to summer, but it definatley has it's downs:
•Around here (we live by a creek... righ in front on one) we need to look forward to being totally swarmed by pesky misquitos. (I have bites upon bites upon bites...:()
•Normally it either rains and gives us about 3 days of sun or is too hot to handle
•Also I am sometimes kicked out of the house for a bit if I can't finad anything to do.
•At night it's really hot in my room so i end up with a sweat covered bed... striped down to my underclothes (which will definatley happen in time... I go to bed fully dressed then end up with only my undergarments on when I wake up) with a fan blowing in my face and still dun feel cool enough:(

So summer's fun but miserable (sometimes) all the same

But today...

Last summer we had a horrible drought, well the past two month's rain has well made up for that. And it's finally stopped raining here, its been rather nice.

The other day when I woke up, nice and sunny out, I went out with a book, sunscreen and laid in the sun for awhile. That lasted about fifteen minutes, you sweat too much, and i was trying to read Kidnapped the sun got in my eyes, and i didn't want my book to become greasy from sunscreen.

:D
So I returned to the nice shade in a plastic chair on the porch

Been fair ever since, I hope it lasts a while longer

It's Wimbledon that's done it. Out come the tennis rackets and out comes the rain. It's traditional. Wouldn't be Wimbledon without loads of people trying to stay dry while eating their strawberries and cream.

Having said that, while it was miserable yesterday it's actually quite nice today. Sunshine and everything. The great fickle British weather.

Snow Patrol, The Strokes, Jet, Muse and Scissor Sisters

Jealousy prevents me from talking to you.

Paris must be some sort of magnet for valubles. I lost my watch there.
Mind you, I also lost a watch in Cornwall (inside a haunted smugglers pub), Greece AND Italy.
And I've just come back from Egypt and I can't find my new one either.

On second thought, maybe I've got a problem.

We'll make you an honorary European Chiana. All you have to do is pass the test.

Fleurdelacour
06-24-2004, 04:52 PM
You've just got back from Egypt!? So you've seen the Pyramids? Now I'm jealous!!

I lost my purse when I was in Somerset... In one of those quaint little coffee shops that sell scones and strawberries and cream... Y'know maybe its just the south-west! Maybe the south-west of England is just bulging with smugglers from the old days, and the south-westeners are all all theives with to many caves, moors and hills! :p ;)

The furthest south of Britain I've ever travelled was the Rodin Musuem in Paris... Furthest north - Holyhead, Wales... That's grim... It's only recently that I've been out of the UK...

Places I've been... A rather miserable list compared to others...

Ireland (lived there been there on holiday about 15 miserable times)
England (live here...)
Wales (driven through it about 15 times)
Holland (a week in June 1998 on a school trip)
Belgium (for a few hours in Bruges on the way back from Holland)
Guernsey (Channel Islands - dead boring, been there twice)
Paris, France (been there three times in the past two years)
Disneyland, France (been there twice in the past two years)
Jersey (Channel Islands - dead boring. Don't go)

Rome is next on my list of Eurpean places to visit... Also, if I get into Warwick university, their History of Art degree offers three months living in Venice!! :D

I really want to go to Australia though... Damn expensive flights! And Asia and Africa... *sigh* And the Med... And New York... I've never evenbeen on a plane! We either fly, get the ferry or Eurostar everywhere!

You must come to Europe Chiana, by hook or by crook! But give me those shoes! :p Although, you may just regret it when you end up in London hehehe. They grey-ness and the rate of crime will have you screaming to get back to where you came from!

My sister went to Wimbledon several years ago - the first year the bad weather forced them to hold matches on the second Sunday, so not only did she get to go see some matches in person, she also got the "I Queued at Wimbledon" sticker they gave out to everyone who waited in the loooong queue for tickets. Sounds like it's one of those sportinng events that's great fun to attend even if you usually don't care for the sport... perhaps someday I'll go too. :) For now, I'm home with much of the same weekend entertainment as Chiana - except without the Amish and with more gaming conventions :D (we went to one last weekend, and there's another next month; this is amazing considering we're not exactly in a thriving mertopolis.) Looking forward to the cheesy little 4th of July fair one of the neighboring small towns puts on though; they've got fireworks and all the classic bad-for-you fair food, so what more do you need? ;)

Have I seen the Pyramids? I've been inside one of the Pyramids. Feel my smugness.

Places I've Been: (Off the British Mainland)

France (Paris and the Southern border)
Switzerland
Greece (Zante Island)
Spain
Italy (Venice, Rome, Florence and Pompeii)
Egypt (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan)

And the most exotic location of all!

BlackGang Chine on the Isle of Wight! :D

You'd love Rome Fleur. It's absolutely gorgeous. But if you go to Italy be sure to see Venice as well, it's the most beautiful city I've ever seen. In some places the canels smelt something awful, but did it very prettily.

Chiana feels dazed by all the glorious places her friends have visited

New york is the most exciting place I've been to in America, you'd probably like it Fleur. Loads of expensive shopping though, dont wear a coat into stores, they'll follow you! makes hex sign at Dulce & Gabanna But the rest of the island can be loads of fun, especially Soho and Grenidge Village.

Ha! Hot damn! I have been somewhere exciting you haven't! This makes Chiana feel a bit better. ;)

I've always wanted to see Egypt, in grade school I wanted to be an Egyptologist. But sadly, after 'The Mummy' came out, the need for them decreased. Bloody film fads!Blast! Nothing against 'The Mummy' of course, favorite action film of all time :D

I do have loads of friends from all over the place, so I could visit them. But the flights... absolutely frightful!

I know people from:
Kazakhstan
Germany (Krefeld, Sexton)
Australia
Egypt
Scotland

Hehe, yes, okay, you're right, it was just a shameless grab for attention on my behalf, I admit it! :)

It's probably like what FleurD said, our winter is a lot like your summer, though where I live it never snows. Having said that, I didn't mean to suggest I was hard done by: I actually like winter more than summer, I don't always deal too well with heat. We could do with a bit more rain though, so if you guys want to send some over from Britain, please do! ;)

As far as travelling goes, the only overseas place I've been to is America, but I do live in Australia where everybody seems to want to come so why should I complain? :D

I'll usher as much rain to Melbourne as humanly possible :p

It never snows in London either! The films lie! They lie! :p

OK, its snowed twice... It snowed this January and last January when I made my first snowman... But not a lot of snow... About an inch or two...

Ah Rome... I want to go even more now.... Italian food... Italian art... Italian men... ;)

ChianaWeasley

Ha, Italian men have quite a reputation over here in America. Actually I have a friend who is from Italy, he's over as an exchange student. You can tell that its socially acceptable to be a tad touchy feely with the opposite sex.

But it doesn't deter me from seeing Italy at all!

And I'm not saying all Italian men are "pro-hands-on", its just the reputation they have over here. And we Americans do get things wrong quite often :p

When we were in Rome there was a military parade on. Lots of young Italian men. Lots of young Italian men in uniform.

We watched it for quite a long time. :D

ChianaWeasley
06-26-2004, 09:22 PM
Ah yes...marching in the brink of summer, in cotton uniforms.
I, unfortunately know the downfall of such foolish displays...lots of sweating, chaffing, and sticky underwear.
Those poor, poor souls.....

Needless to say, I just marched a parade in 'Islands of Adventure' in Florida. KILLER I SAY!

Xazinon

Hehehe, let me assure you Chiana that that particular perception of Italian men as a bit "touchy feely" is not exclusive to America! In fact, this whole conversation reminds me of an AFL commentator who exclaimed when commenting on someone who had gotten a lot of the ball in a particular match that said person had "gotten more touches [ie. of the ball] than a supermodel in an Italian bar." :D

Thanks for the rain FleurD, but it hasn't arrived yet: are you sure you sent it down to Melbourne? ;)

Ooh, parades, how exciting! I haven't been in one of those since I was in Scouts.. I think the last parade I saw was one that was held in Melbourne just after the Sydney Olympics, though I'm not sure about that. Hehe, well, you may get a bit sweaty Chiana but you enjoy it and that's the main thing right? :)

Oh I bet you did! ;) I think that's definatly swayed the Rome vote!

There's this one Italian resturant near me which I refuse to go to, dispite their wonderful ciabattas. The waiters always greet customers with a kiss on the hand... This would be fine if; 1) I knew the waiter 2) I wasn't with my parents 3) He wasn't using his walking stick and didnt have a face of Italian wrinkles...

My ex was half Italian and half Spanish... I think he had some scottish in him too... Should have been a dream combination... He was "touchy" in a more clingy creepy way... annoyingly romantic... actually more stalker-ish and obsessed with weapons... He's going to be a serial rapist and murder when he leaves college...

Oh I'm sure I sent it down! I didn't rain here from about 10pm yesterday until about now (5pm) so it had to be somewhere :p Maybe you just weren't looking in the right places for the rain! Sent us some warm weather then! London is just dreary...

Sticky underwear? Eugh... That's also a symptom of going to clammy pubs and sitting on buses in the hot weather... Tis disgusting... When will they ban smoking in public places?....

ChianaWeasley
06-27-2004, 12:41 PM
Well, the joke is that to people from Britian, you're not allowed to smoke anywhere here. At least in 'Hope Springs' that was the joke about public smoking.

Xaz, I'm sorry to disapoint you ;) but marching in sweaty undergarments for half an hour, really isn't my ideal situation for a good time. I envy the floaters! At the St. Patrick's Day parade, I wanted to leap onto one of the 'motorhead's' mo-peds and ride off. :p

Public smoking, will never be banished completely over here, I'm afraid. The American economy relies too much on the tobacco industry.

And about that ex Fleur...perhaps carrying mace wouldn't be too bad of an idea for alittle bit, eh? ;)

~BH
06-27-2004, 01:25 PM
What's mace? Is it like pepper-spray?

Well, the joke is that to people from Britian, you're not allowed to smoke anywhere here.

AND you can't drink until you're twenty-one! In Italy you're legally allowed to drink at the age of 16, a whole 5 years before Americans.

Making him your ex sounds like a wise move Fleur.

Fleurdelacour
06-27-2004, 01:58 PM
I think its the same in France too, sixteen in the drinking age. You'd think it was the same over here too! There were 16 year olds in the pub... ok I can't talk :p But they're still in school! They're ment to be uncorrupted whilst they're in school!

Is a mace one those metal club like things with spikes on it?

The thing is... I'm still sorta friends with him... He's good friends with two of my female friends and he texts and calls one of them ALL THE TIME... I had to see PoA with him and my friends and all he spoke about on the way home after was what Harry was doing in the opening scene under the covers, and the exicutioner's axe! No - He wanted to hear a certain word leave my mouth regarding Harry's under-the-cover "spell practising" Probaly so he could initate it as soon as he got home  So that creeped the hell out of me...

It's so hard trying to stay PG in these forums ;)

ChianaWeasley

Haha! By mace I meant the pepper spray, but depending on how bad your opponent is, I'd go with the studded club. ;)

Yup, over here the legal drinking age is 21 years, and not a whole lot of people follow that rule. And as a result of "being rebellious" a bunch of kids were kicked out of band for drinking underage after homecoming.

The thing is, over here, the fun of drinking, is drinking under age. when you turn twenty one, its not fun anymore. I am one of the minority that doesn't find it entertaining to secretly get drunk with my friends and do dumb stuff. Crazy huh?

I'm more the....lets see if 'Joe' can down a gallon of milk in under an hour during homecoming, while we're all sober. Yeah. Americans, I know.

Xaz peers out the window.

Nope, still not a lot of rain about, lots of wind though! I suppose it's my fault for not being specific as to which part of Melbourne to send the rain to, but hopefully it'll get here in the end! I don't know if I can send you any warm weather, it's not really warm here at the moment: I think you'd do better to ask a Queenslander if you can find one! :)

The floaters... I take it you mean the people who ride on the floats, Chiana? I don't know, they still have to do a lot of moving around and waving and so on, don't they? Still, I suppose that might not be quite as sweat-inducing on the underwear as full fledged marching, hehe! ;)

EDIT: By the way, drinking age here is 18, if that contibutes to this debate in any way, shape or form, thought you'd like to know!

Ah, but in Britain there's the grand old institution of the Pub. There you shall find kids drinking lemonade, old folks sipping sherry, and everyone talking about their day before the pub quiz starts. Over here kids get used to the concept of the pub as being much more family orientated than bars or clubs in America, so when they do turn eighteen (or beforehand) drinking is much less the cool, rebellious thing to do because you've seen your grandad have a pint of Guiness every weekend after the rugby.

Mind you, I speak from the perspective of someone living in the country. Maybe Fleur can fill us in on city life. :p

Fleurdelacour
06-28-2004, 09:58 AM
City pub life eh? Well living in London is different to other cities like Birmingham, or Leeds... We have all sorts of pubs. And more crime... Clubby pubs, old man pubs, empty local pubs, big chain pubs... The pub I go to is more of a clubby pub... They used to play a load of cheesy pop music which was great to dance too... But they got a new manager, so out went that DJ, and in came dancehall music!

But they're dangerous... About a month ago I nearly got bottled, if I had moved a few seconds earler I would probaly be blind in my right eye... And on Saturday night/Sunday morning, this man had a crutch and started beating this other man to a pulp, people tried to stop it, but most people dont dare because they may have knives and guns... The rate of crime is just rediculous! Thats why I need to go to Uni outside of London, I can't deal with it... And it's expensive! Shots used to be £1, now they're £1.50 :p I don't like them much anyway... :barf: I didn't used to drink at all... But I like cocktails...

Like bh said pubs are pretty much part of British culture. You're brought to them from an early age... Pretty much the same in Ireland too - my parents met in a pub! Hehe! It's not exactly rebellious, its just normal...

Maybe because drinking in Britain is not really frowned upon is why my college (and others) seems to have a severe drugs problem... Most people seem to do drugs :( It's really worrying... This bloke once said to me "Our generation is gonna be soo !!!!ed up! We'll have a stoner running the country!" He thought it was funny... I think he was stoned at the time...

~BH
06-28-2004, 01:02 PM
... and in contrast I welcome you to the world of the country in which there is very little of any drug related activity going on. Lots of beer though. Not to mention suspicious bottles of moonshine.

We did have an almost murder once though. Someone got stabbed through the chest with a pitchfork. But they lived.

Cedric

Around here they'res too much drinking going around to really care anymore. It's not like I'm gonna start any time soon or anything though, because I don't see much of a point to it and I know what it does to people. Like this ex girlfriend I had would get drunk with this one friend of hers when her mom was out of town, that's all they'd do, get drunk and fall asleep. I just saw that as more pathetic then anything else. You've gotta have a pretty bad life to use that as your only entertainment.

Drug use and drinking is everywhere at my school, I don't pay any attention to it anymore. But I'm not exactly the type of person who picks their friends by what they do on the weekends. I just roll with the punches.

You've gotta have a pretty bad life to use that as your only entertainment.

My friend Becky is like that. Her only aim for the weekend is to get drunk. Her only aim for study leave is to get drunk. Her only aim for half-term and the summer holidays is to get drunk.

Or that's what I thought until early April... When she asked me to get some magic mushrooms for her from some hippy shop. I refused and stormed off. Then the next day in college she was bragging about the drugs she had done... She also acts like she's superiour to people who dont drink exessively and dont do drugs. Her best friend Sam(antha) is also the same. She refuses to apologise to me since she insulted me. It was racial abuse coming from a "friend" (and it was! you do not under any circumstances tell someone who isnt from this country to !!!! off back to their their home-country, whether, they're black, white, Asian -whereever you're from!!) and she thinks she's to high and almighty to apologise... Makes me writher with anger!!

I'm really worried though... I have to go to V2004 with Becky, and I don't know what to do... I just don't know... I just want to see my favourite bands live! She's going to ruin it... She's going to get so high and drunk and be a complete slut and just... ugh...

And yes computers are the more favourable entertainment!

Quite a ranty post there...

Trouble is, she's going to drink herself silly and not get anything else done. Then she's going to have a lot of problems in the getting a job department.

Are you going to V with anyone else? Best advice is to just ignore her, feel superior, and live in the knowledge that she probably won't remember any of her amazing time at the festival.

No offense, but if I were you I'd write her off that list, and give her a good smack upside the head.

Hey Fleur (or any other forign people not living in the states), I've got a question for you. I'm thinking about the possiblility of maybe becoming an art teacher or something, and was wondering if you had any idea what the qualifications were, you think they're higher or lower then they are here?

I really have no idea what I wanna do with my life, if I become a teacher, then it's the same old thing ever day, I don't know if I'm good enough to become a concept artist, which would be really cool, and I don't wanna shoot for the acting thing because I know I'll end up as a waiter for many many years. Oh what to do, what to do....

Don't sweat it Chiana, it's natural for girls to freak out about.... Well everything, but hair especially :D I'm dying my hair a very light blue tonight, in hopes that it'll fade gray...

Fleurdelacour
07-02-2004, 03:03 PM
Looking like a Smurf would make a good talking point :p maybe you ought to save it for Halloween ;)

Well Ced, I've been looking at millions of prospecuses for Universities that do History of Art courses (which is the degree I want to do next year) and the careers that span out from History Of Art degrees lead into teaching (something I dont want to do!) publishing, art dealing, auticion houses, musuems, galleries... even the media! But teaching seems to be the main career out of that degree.

You need pretty good grades though over here. I need to get at least three Bs in my A-Levels to go to Warwick, York or St. Andrews Universities... And they're the best ones. I mean Prince William studies History of Art at St Andrews! I'd say Britain is the best place to study History of Art... You've got the language, the galleries, the Continent (many trips abroad, Warwick Uni offers three months in Venice!) and the architecture.

Although... Some Universities want you to have knowledge of a forgien language... I cancelled out the ones that said you needed an A-Level in a forgien language! lol

So basically... It's pretty tough and there arent a lot of places :( About 30 in each uni for the course... So I really need to get good grades, which is going to be hard for me because I'm not academic, and I dont have the GCSE grades... *sigh* I think I'm aiming too high and should look into normal unis like Aberdeen and Reading....

Cedric
07-02-2004, 03:12 PM
Actually, I was gonna dye it this one type of blue that I was hoping would fade into gray, but the stuff I got turned it gray right away, so I'm very happy :D Then I think I'm gonna put a few black streaks or spots in it. It's pretty damn cool, if I say so myself.

It's almost like I dye my hair too much, this year alone (well, this school year), I've dyed bleached it, turned it platinum, black, and now gray. Fun stuff.

eggnog....hmmm...how the heck do you even explain eggnog???

Eggnog...is a thick creamish color drought with little black specks...tastes like a sweet, thick....hell just lemme look it up! :o
http://www.ecoledesmaitres.com/html/promo/promo_jan01_f/eggnog.jpg

Basic Non-alcoholic Eggnog
12 eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 quart cream
to taste vanilla
dash of nutmeg

Seperate eggs at room temp. Beat yolks till creamed with about half of sugar, whites till peaked then add other half of sugar. Beat cream till stiff. Then fold all together. Add vanilla to taste - but remember that a little bit of vanilla goes a long way.

Place into containers keep in refrigerator for at least one day. Shake before serving.

it tastes like....well....nutmeggy, egg milkshake

Anywhooo....

I've seen eggnog made in a lot of strange ways, the stuff you get at the store (I think) is kinda like pancake batter ( consistency, not taste), then I was once watching a cooking show where they made it close to the thickness of stiff whip cream. All in all it's not a good thing, ever. I really have no idea how it tastes because I've never felt the urge to drink anything called "nog". *shiver*

Yeah, I think it's a national law of something that it be sold only once a year, to keep all the eggnog drunks in line.

Please be a sign.....

Sick of rain... Sick of rain... Sick of rain...

Sick of sun, sick of sun sick of sun... I want some snow for the weekend, that would be great. Then again, it really wouldn't be summer around here without crazy temperatures off and on, so I guess I'll just have ta live with it.

Keep your chin up D, the sun'll come around sooner or later, just think happy thoughts :D Or you could just turn all the lights on in your house and close all the windows and make yourself think it's really sunny :)

Snow?! It's July! :p

I could do that... But sitting indoors with the lights on doesnt have the same effect as sitting on a towel in the park reading a book or fashion magazine :p

The flying ants came out today... It was quite sunny and humid this morning so they came out *shudder* as well as millions of red ants! eesh... But it's raining again... The weather has one week to pick up...

We're being punished for last year... Hottest day ever last year...

Flying Ant Day? It was Flying Ant Day? I completely missed it! Mind you, I did stay indoors all day with a headache, so maybe that's why.

Oh well, I suppose there's Swarming Bees Day to look forward to.

Fleurdelacour
07-11-2004, 01:56 PM
Swarming Bees Day? Everyday is Swarming Bees Day in my garden... We've got a bees nest under our shed in the garden... It also hosts a family of mice. Well at least keeps the wasps away! But worryingly I did find a dead wasp on my desk this morning... Which is weird because I havent had my bedroom windows open in about a month...

Cedric

Twilight zone music plays

I say you're both crazy. Hm? Good? Okay.

And yes snow, it would be awesome, if only just for a day or two. But it looks like it'll be another gray but warm day. Oh well.

We do get Flying Ant Days! A sunny day after a rainy spell, flying ants come out and attack! It does happen, it's not weird :p You're the weird one wanting snow...

Cedric
07-11-2004, 02:51 PM
At least snow would freeze all these crazy psyco mutant ants ;)

I have seen flying anys, but I usually just think they're flies, so I don't really pay attention. Must be a european thing... Geez D! Sounds like you need a serious exterminator in your place. Just remember, you're bigger then them and they're probably much more scared of you then you are of them. Unless they have rabies, then all bets are off.

Oh no, urban pests are cheeky little brats, they're arrogant little brats... They'll sit right beside you! Wasps... Bees... Mice! We're actualy under attack by mice. Driven my mum into insanity as she's the Hygene Queen. But nothing gets rid of them...

Once I was sitting right here and I saw a mouse just stroll on by... Traps, poisons... Nothing works... I think we've blocked their way into our house, but they'll find another way in! The house survived the Blitz but is being eaten away by mice... *scratches head*

Flying Ant Day, Swarming Bees Day, you guys have everything over there don't you, lucky lucky lucky! How long is it till Plague of Locusts day, anyways? ;)

We don't have any interesting days like that over here, unless you count Venomous Snake Week and the ever popular Crocodile Wrestling Day, but they're vastly overrated. :D

~BH
07-12-2004, 10:08 AM
Mice? We don't get many mice where I live. Here the pest is those mice with wings, bats. Mice can be a problem though when the cat decides to leave us charming little presents of mouse corpses on the doorstep. Lovely.

You're joking about Crocodile Wrestling Week Right? Because after seeing that Steve Irwin show I'm prepared to believe anything about Australians.

Fleurdelacour
07-12-2004, 02:40 PM
Yeah when I think of Crocodile Wresting, I think of Steve Irwin. I even have to say Steve Irwin in my awful attempt at an Australian accent :o

Didn't Steve Irwin dangle his baby at a crocodile?....

Cedric

Meh, close enough, he was holder her while feeding one. He has to be on something, I mean come on, either that or he's just so messed up that he needs to be on something. He's like ADD or something.

We sometimes get ants, in the house, but that's pretty rare... I'm just boring I guess.

Woah, double post, it's been a while, kinda feels good :D

Anyway, the weirdest wheather yesterday. It was like upper 90s in the daytime (crazy hot) then at night (I donno, probably about 2 in the morning) it was raining, there were thunder storms, and even lightning, the whole sha-banga-bang! It was weeeeiiird.

-Cedric

Moxie
07-13-2004, 06:57 PM
We had an awesome lightning storm here a few days ago, with near-constant thunder and frequent flashes bright enough to read by. As for critters in the house... mice are a constant out here in the country (especially since the mice all know our cat not only can't catch them, but won't even try  ) and this has been a bad year for ants as well, although I haven't seen any of the flying ants trying to swarm into our house to build a new nest. (Yes, a swarm got into our attic a couple of years ago  we emptied quite a bit of an ecologically friendly but very ant-unfriendly spray onto them, and thus prevented the establishment of an ant nest in our attic.) We do also have a few bats around, but they prefer to roost in ancient barns which of course are easy to find in northern New England... actually, I have a bat house I've been meaning to put up in hopes of attracting more to come and eat the mosquitoes. :p

Hehe, yeah, ol' Steve got into a bit of trouble over that baby/crocodile thing, even though it was proved that the baby wasn't very close to the crocodile at all in the end and it was jsut a camera angle that made it look so bad in the first place. Strange, strange fellow indeed! :)

*squirms* In your attic! Eesch...

I wish we'd even have a thunderstorm... It'd make a change from the chilly cloud, and rain... Something interesting to look at... Instead of waking up every afternoon, I mean morning... ;) And seeing grey skies and rain... FOR THE PAST MONTH!

Steve Irwin is still weird.... Hey bh remember when was on Graham Norton and he made Graham wrestle with the crocodile...

Of course the crocodile was inflatable :p And poor ole Graham got his flamboyant glittering suit soaked!

Yes! I remember. Sigh. Where is Graham these days?

Anyway, I've come in looking for some congratulations. Unlike Fleur D's school mine doesn't kick you out to college after 5 years, you're expected to stay for 7 years. So I'm still there.

Guess who just got made a prefect for the final year. Yes. That's right.

Although to be quite honest I have absolutely no idea what I've done to deserve it. I know quite a lot I've done to not deserve it. Makes me suspicious.

You're a prefect?! I don't know whether to laugh or say well done ;) I have a Fred/George attitude to Prefects and Head boys/girls :p

At college we don't have prefects... We had prefects in secondary school though... As you can imagine I was never a prefect.

Well you've got something to put on that dreaded personal statement now!

I think the BBC sighed up Graham... Try to make Saturday night tv better or something... I dont know if this means a collaboration with Bruce Forsythe talking about the latest inventions in *ahem* certain toys, or something else... But it's bound to be camp!

Cedric
07-14-2004, 02:56 PM
Where's Graham? He's on American television, that's where he is. He has his own show on comedy central now, it's not half bad either.

I donno why you guys have to go through so much school, seems like if you can add and read you're pretty much set for life :D I'm trying to decide on a college myself, I could probably go anywhere I want, but I just donno...

-Cedric

Fleurdelacour
07-15-2004, 02:22 PM
You stole Graham! I didn't think the Americans would like his crude adult comedy...

Oh no... today is most definatly FLYING ANT DAY...

Swarms... The swarms! Out the front in the drive, and out the back in the garden... I was standing on the decking in my garden and just saw swarms of them coming out of a hole in the garden path. I sprinked those washing tablets over them and got the hose. It killed them. But then I turned around and looked up at the house hoping no flying ant would enter the attic, like Moxie said...

Just where the roof starts (we have an attic conversion and I sleep in the attic...) there's this plastic bit under the drainpipe that runs along, and there's a slight gap under this white plastic thing. WASPS... Wasps... Wasps flying in... I found a dead wasp on my desk a few days ago but thought nothing much of it... and my brothers have been finding wasps, alive and dead in their bedrooms which are under my room...

It gets worse... They said on the news that we're not going to have a summer at all... It's going to be sodding miserable until next year... :( It's not fair... *sigh*

~BH
07-15-2004, 04:17 PM
We STILL haven't had Flying Ant Day yet here. I'm beginning to think that even the ants don't want to come out in this miserable weather.

Until next year?! Sodding weather.

I thought that after 'The Superbowl Incident' Americans were scared stupid of having something even remotely racy on their television. Apparently BBC America is being forced to bleep out all the swearwords in its shows. Doesn't exactly seem like a Graham friendly atmosphere.

Cedric
07-15-2004, 07:24 PM
Incident? That wasn't an incident, that seemed like just another day to me. And you think that would stop us from having "racy" stuff on t.V.? Fat chance, Americans love their racy content. The more the better :D

Saaaame old same old, too hot for it's own good, I'm getting tired of this... I'll trade you for yours any day D, just say the word.

Wow, a prefect, congratulations m'dear! LOL, I get the feeling your school won't know what has hit them somehow, hope you enjoy it! ;)

I was actually house captain at primary school, but I don't think I was a very good house captain: I was a small, pretty shy guy, I don't think I had the commanding presence to be a house captain. But hey, like you, I did get a badge! :D

Fleurdelacour
07-16-2004, 08:50 AM
House captains and prefects... What is the world coming too! :p

Yes. Send - the hot weather over...

Oh really? I thought everything was now censored over there because of that imfamous *ahem* popping out ;) Graham Norton did take the complete piss out of it of course. I didn't see what as the fuss was about personally... We've all seen Titanic and paintings of naked women flocking around galleries... ok might not be the entirely the same thing... art... Janet Jackson... But oh well...

I mean its the sort of thing we're used to on British telly! Remember Judy Finnigan at the tv awards a few years back! :D Or... on This Morning and the... oh I cant say it, but daytime telly really is an eye opener! What is it with Richard and Judy and these sort of moments...

~BH
07-16-2004, 09:08 AM
I'm surprised to hear you say that Cedric, because over here in the yonder of Europe we've really gotten the impression that Americans are really repressed when it comes to TV. I thought you didn't like anything even slightly racy.

Judy Finnigan's own little 'incident' was funny as hell. Especially considering it was John Leslie who ran over to cover her up. On live television!

Cedric
07-16-2004, 04:57 PM
Well if we're talkin' nudity, then yeah, we don't get anything like that :( But pretty much everything that boarders on nudity is discouraged but allowed. The Janet Jackson thing didn't single handedly change anything as far as I can tell.

Janet Jackson...tsk tsk....but really....who in america hasn't flashed nearly everyone in the American communitee, while on the television for something?

It seems that europe is much more lenient with nudity in films and television, then in america. I've heard Britian is much more offended by violence. In more opinion, thats what we should be worrying about our kids seeing on tv soo much, but thats just me.

Made a prefect Xaz? Congratulations! Though, remember what happens to the shy Aussie who gained high power too fast...absolutely nothing :p ;)

Ffft. Been five minutes and already Xazinon is stealing my thunder.

I'm not spouting gospel or anything, I'm just saying what the European impression of American television is. I've never been to America myself, but I've heard all about those Bible belt schools which deny evolution and ban Harry Potter. We're studing the American governmental system in my politics class, and it just came up because we were discussing Republicans and Democrats.

And no Chiana, no prefect role for me I'm afraid: I WAS house captain a loong time ago, but it was very much a token role and probably only given to me because of my rather exemplary marks, hehe! I'm not as shy as I used to be, but if I ever take over the world I'm sure I'll be able to find a spot in my administration for you so as you can keep me on the right track, okay? :D

Hehe, come on now BH, I'm sure it wouldn't be all that bad having me in charge of the world! I'm not generally a very motivated person, so it would provide an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and talented aide, perhaps one with prefect experience, to utilise me as a figurehead and political puppet and wield true world power from behind the scenes! ;)

Ah, you're probably right Chiana, I don't think I'd make a very good commanding and authorative overlord really. I reckon as members of the administration we'd be able to get significant discounts on Chinese food though, woohoo! :D I'm sure some of the lackeys will be able to handle all that tariff and interntional trade stuff, if it was necessary.. Hehe, aww, don't worry Chiana, I'd never replace my little buddy Watson! Given his cunning, there's no guarantess FleurD could beat him, and even if she did I'm sure I could find a great job for him in my world cabinet! I think he'd rather like being Head of Police and the nice shiny badge such a job would get him, I mean who wouldn't right? :D

I'm sure he'd love to go on holidays and visit you, Chiana, he no doubt gets sick of having to put up with me all the time: staying with a nice girl like you for a few weeks would make his day I reckon!

As Xaz speaks, Watson trundles up with a tiny turtle-sized suitcase, wearing a tropical shirt and teensy sunglasses. Xaz rolls his eyes and gives Watson a little scowl.

See, what did I tell you? Still, I hardly think there was any reason to be so eager to leave, I can't be THAT bad, surely...

Xaz stalks off to find a good place to sulk.

;)

BH leans down to whisper conspiratorially in Watson's ear

You can live with me Watson. It's a lot more fun. And there's a nice lady turtle next door. All you have to do is tell me the secrets of Xaz's detection skills.

You were on the TV? Where?! Why?!

I got sunburnt yesterday on my face and arms. It was breezy so I had no idea how hot the sun was. Then when I finally saw a mirror I was pretty tomato faced.

Ced, you're no where near as hot as Spain right now... 47c! My friend is on holiday there so I'm rather worried... The summer heat really isn't being distrubuted around the world properly... Spain isn't that far away, and our temperatures are still 19-22c with loads of grey cloud *sigh* This weather is so boring and repetitive! cloudcloudcloudcloudcloud.....

Why were you the focus? Anti-social youth on the run ;) ? I watched the tv show back... And it's just rather embarrassing now... I was at the front of the crowd at in shot a lot... And being forced to jump up and down in the top I was wearing :o Not good... really not good....

I could beat Watson... Just take out his wind-up key thing! ;) He seems pretty eager to leave you anyway. :p

Xaz peeks over his shoulder from the corner he's sulking in to see BH whispering conspiratorially to Watson. He narrows his eyes and wanders over.

Hmph, I don't know what she's telling you, but I hope you're not going to listen to her Watson, she's trouble that one!

Xaz scowls at BH who sticks her tongue out at him before gesturing Watson over to one side of the room to whisper in his ear a little more. Xaz, looking a trifle worried, thinks about going after them but decides he is still a little hurt from Watson's hastily made travel plans and stays where he is, keeping a careful eye on them while trying to sulk at the same time, no easy feat.

Welll, fine, you talk to her, but remember what I said.. and try not to get that sharp looking shirt crinkled!

;)

Ooh, I see you're quite devious yourself FleurD... taking out the key, how underhanded of you! But hey, maybe that's exactly what he expects you to try, hmm? ;)

Xaz looks a bit more relieved and shoots a knowing glance at BH.

Sorry about the sunburn there, BH.. see Watson, you'll get cooked to a crisp if you go with her! ;)

Here's a trick to having bad nose burn....::leans in to whisper:: join Cirque De Soleil ;) the make up covers it up, noone would ever suspect!

I got sunburt again... On my back where I didnt manage to rub in all the areas! I went to the seaside! Made sandcastles, huge holes in the sand... Was attacked by seagulls and experienced the great thing that is National Rail and its delayed train goodness... Margate looks as if it's trapped in the 80s I have to say... And the water looked really murky... And sand gets everywhere you have to wonder how it gets in some places!!

Welcome back! Ah Great Yarmouth! Never been there, but I've heard the horror stories! :p Yes but our crowedness makes you feel at home though... :) Of course, with a sunburnt nose you could join the circus as Chiana suggested, but I think being Rudolf would be much more entertaining! and the furry costume would stop you ever getting burnt again!

Well I've got the Irish lucky charm... ;)Right?.... Bet that's something that wind up turtle doesn't have!

Ah nostalgia... *thinks back....*

Sand somehow always manages to get into...

a). places you didn't know exsisted
b). places that weren't near sand
c). in clothes you didnt wear to the beach
d). your sheets (arghh!!! I hate that.)

I've been attacked by seagulls too Fluer, I know the feeling of utter horror. I was quite rattled those two years ago.....they are organized. Like a flying mafia by the sea.....

Ah. Now I'm getting all nostalgic about the good old Private Detective Days.

Hehe, last time people got nostalgic about the detective days I was encouraged to bring the agency back, but it kinda died from a lack of responses, alas! Still, if anyone has a case they want solved I'm happy to give it a shot: they just have to dig up the agency from the third page of threads! :D

I'm sure that Irish lucky charm would hold you in good stead FleurD, you're right, I don't think Watson does have that! He does have comprehensive training from the WUADTS (Wind Up Animal Detective Training Society), but I suppose that can only take you so far! ;)

Sorry about the sunburn, it seems to be the happening thing round here, all the kids are getting into it, lol! Hope it gets better soon! :)

Haha yes! That's what I called it - a flying mafia! They just sort of swoop in, wearing white suits... They mingle about seeing where they can get the best stuff. They go off and more come back then they start attacking you! Even if you've got no food! They're so evil...

Ah The Third Page, otherwise known as The Void... We ought to feel ashamed of ourselves for letting the thread sink so far!

It's offical... We're in a heatwave! :D Yesterday was about 30c, and temperatures are swaying between 26-28c for the next few days! I hope this weather keeps up!

You cant call 26-28 a HEAT wave

35-40 for a week or more is a heat wave:cool:

Right now, its not nessacarily a heat wave...but its really humid and it's just been hanging around all week...icky humidity. I'd rather it be egg cooking hot:eek:, then swimming in hot percipitation.

Amb, if we had that heat (and we did get to 37c last summer) I'd die! The government has released warnings over smog for the weekend! Smog! It's not THAT hot, maybe pollution levels have rised in the city, even though they're meant to have been reduced since the congestion charge was introduced

It's just really humid out... But I'm not complaining. It makes a change to the rain and wind!

Cedric

Right on Amb, up high buddy :D Thankfully it's cooled off quite a bit around these parts, but it's still warm... I want rain though, or show, or a better yet, a blizzard.

In west London there were floods... Lightning struck three girls... Up north a boy was killed by lightning... Transport has gone crazy and the sewage has gone crazy, it all sort of exploded into the Thames because of yesterday's rain...

But for once I didn't see any of this freak weather... Just a few showers!

It's so hot, just sitting on my arse all day is just excruating. I could deal with this heat if there was a breeze at least!

I think I'll join you in that fridge Chiana...

Cedric

Dog pile in the fridge!!!

Ced jumps on top of the two girls, as they cry in pain

Oops, sorry :D

Weather's been alright around these parts, not too hot, not too cold. Although, of course, I want it to be cold... Soon enough.

Gahh!!!My not so secret hiding place has been discovered!!!

Well, as we all know, the end of summer means back to school shopping, and oh how it has hit our house....my sister is starting college.

 Our house has been taken hostage by plastic storage tubs, tuperware, school supplies, linens, pillows, comforters, airconditioners, packing boxes....there's so much!!!

And the plastic tubs are particularly viscious! :p

Stumbles into the thread, looking dazed...

I just watched six hours straight of old cartoons from 1996 on tape...

Wanders to the nearest armchair and turns on TV to watch Ninja Turtles. Quickly falls into a deep trance.

...

WOW! SCHOOL! NO! I just finished WORK!

Quickly retreats back into her world of Ninja Turtles, where Raph and Leo are fighting ONCE AGAIN!

Argh, those boys'll never learn...

Productive day there Ravenclaw :p

Our weather is FREAK weather right now... It's a mix of hot weather, floods and thunderstorms. This day last year Britain broke the record for the highest temperature recorded 100f or 37.9c... A few days ago the hottest night time temperature was recorded... yay...

And it's August... So exam and festival time! I get both in one week... Next week it's v2004 and As-Level results! :D

I think mixed/irregular weather is better than hot all the time... Can't stand this much longer... Heat, no Ac, working out is almost impossible, but I find my way through it, somehow :p

Maybe I should go crack open a fire hydrant :D Then again, I always get such insane sunburns this time of year, I donno why I even go outside anymore.

Fleur runs in excitedly waving a piece of paper

I PASSED! :D I PASSED! :D

Ten marks from an A in English literature and language! A beautiful B!

Funnily enough, my other two subjects that require no concentration or brainwork, or remembering what syntactical parralellism is, I got the lowest grades, a modest C in Fine Art and a D in Textiles. They're considered better grades at AS-Level, so yay :)

I failed last year, and this year got ten marks (annoyingly lol) from an A this year! :D

I'm so happy! Who cares about the weather or Britain and Ireland being really crap in the Olympics, I actually passed an exam! And got a bloody good mark!

Cedric

Woohoo!! Yeah! That's great! Doesn't really understand what D just said :D

No, I'm kidding. Good job D, I'm very happy for you :) So what does this mean now? Are you leaving college already? Or is this just some kinda level you have to meet?

First time I tried to explain the wonders of England and Wales education system and the Internet died... Second time the computer died...

They're the NEWTs. Divided into two. you need them to get into University.

I give up :p I have to 'rock out' with rockstars and their nice drinks in a tent all weekend... Oh how exhausting it'll be ;) Actually, it probaly will be... Carrying camping gear around London in attempt to find a train station...

I got a B! Ooh did I mention I got 96/100 on the exam! hehe!! :D

Rain is just evil. Bloody evil. Try putting up a TENT in the RAIN in the DARK!

Evil.

I don't understand how you can love it so much :p It's causing landslides, and flashfloods in CORNWALL! It's the wettest summer - EVER in Britain... They think so far anyway...

Cedric
08-26-2004, 03:24 PM
I only love it so much because it's been nonstop boiling temperatures lately, and my pale skin can't handle all that hotness :p

Actually, last weekend, I didn't kinda set up a tent in the rain. Then when it was dark, and still pouring, me and my cousin looked in it, saw that the floor was covered in water, and just decided to sleep in the car :D Which was surprisingly comfortable...

Lol, thats a shame. I love staying in a tent when its raining, its a really cool sound. I just kind of feel dizzy when I'm in a car and it's raining, lol. Odd, huh?

But if a car's good and comfortable I'll sleep in any of them :P

I love being in the car when it rains, I find the noise of rain splattering on the windows; relaxing, I feel like retiring to the tub for a hot and steamy bubble bath whenever I'm in the car listening to the rain. This is quite weird considering that I don’t own any bubble mix.

Me too. I can't believe it has gottern hotter here. I want it to rain. I like being inside on a Saturday, reading a book, drinking a cup of hot chocolate with mini-marshmallows and wearing jammies.
